LPG vs Diesel vs Electric Forklifts

Your application for the forklift can determine which type of forklift is best for you.

LPG Forklifts

  • Price of forklift more competitive, so cheaper to own.
  • Refuelling can be done easily, ie replace gas bottle when the current one runs out.
  • Parts for LPG forklift are generally easier to obtain as many of the motors are similar to ‘car engines’.
  • Performance and power, travel speeds and acceleration rates usually outperform the electric or diesel equivalent forklifts.
  • Suitable for both indoors and outdoors usage.

  • Maintenance levels & costs can be on the higher side, ie more frequent servicing may be required.
  • Fuel costs can be higher than diesel forklifts
  • Rear view operator visibility is lessened due to the gas bottle being located behind the forklift driver.

Diesel Forklifts

  • Diesel fuel can be comparatively cheaper than LPG.
  • Operator rear view visibility is better as there is no gas bottle to obstruct view.
  • Larger engine life versus LPG forklifts.
  • Better on gradients due to higher torque in engine compared to LPG forklifts.

  • Noisier operation then both the LPG and electric forklifts.
  • Generally bulkier in size, so many not be suitable in confined areas.
  • Not suitable for indoors use due to emissions from engine.

Electric Forklifts

  • Less noise compared to either LPG or Diesel forklifts.
  • Maintenance costs are generally less than LPG or Diesel due to no engine, transmission or radiators.
  • Turning radius can be better, especially with 3 wheel option forklifts.
  • Rear visibility is better due to no gas bottle to obstruct view.
  • Easier for operator to drive as less for the driver to think about as they only have an accelerator and brake pedal.
  • Fume free, so no harmful fuel emissions. Better suited for indoors food handling premises.

  • Battery can be expensive to replace.
  • Higher initial purchase outlay compared to LPG forklifts.
  • If double shift is required for forklift, battery life may not cope. If battery has been forgotten to be charged the night before then forklift will not be able to be used the next day.
  • Not very reliable on greater gradients, battery will flatten quicker.
  • Not suitable for outdoor use in wet weather.
